Natsumes gives up on interfering due to fear and exhaustion. Samejima kidnaps the wounded Ryou and takes him to Tahiti, where they live out the rest of their days.

The ending's title, "Que sommes-nous ?" is a reference to a painting by French artist Paul Gauguin called D'où venons-nous ? Que sommes-nous ? Où allons-nous ? (English: Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?). The art was created in Tahiti and likely inspired the setting of the ending.
