The Protagonist, also known as Natsume Souichirou (夏目 宗一郎) or The Spectator, is the main character of MAMIYA. He is a Spectator in the Upper Layer who was assigned to the story where Mamiya exerts its influence.

Although Spectators generally do not retain their memories of their previous life, the Protagonist has memories of his life as Natsume Souichirou. Before his death, he was friends with four of the attendants to his funeral: he was childhood churchmates with Morichika Haruki, neighbors with Suou Keito, and classmates with Kikuchi Ryou and Toujou Minato.

As the being known as Mamiya is the one responsible for these four people's deaths, he despises Mamiya and finds them unforgivable, especially their leader, Mamiya Yumehisa.
